I checked out this bird as a way to start off the New Year. Sometimes the owl hovers over its target before plunging.

Being attacked by a Northern Shrike. The owl is competition, not its next meal. I had the camera on a tripod and was watching the shrike, waiting to see if it would attack. I started shooting a couple of seconds before it reached the owl, otherwise a shot like this would be very difficult to get.

It was a two owl day, my first for this species. The birds were a couple of hours apart. A few Northern Hawk Owls have come south this winter. Next year we should have Great Grays if the boreal rodent cycle works in our favour. Hawk Owls are well known for being cooperative subjects. There was no need to push the birds for photos. We just waited and they often came close to us.

This particular bird was not supposed to be a good subject because it spends most of its time hunting from power lines. However, for two minutes it flew across the road and perched at eye level at the edge of a forest. Worked for me. This photo is uncropped. The bird was so close I had to back up to fit it in the frame. That's a nice problem to have.

Pointe-Yamachiche - The bird was perched on a fallen tree at eye level, a rare view for this species. It was late in the afternoon so it was very alert but not yet hunting.

Pointe-Yamachiche - No cedars for cover here. The bird was out in the open.

Presqu'ile Provincial Park - I watched three feeding actively in a snowstorm. They didn't mind the weather a bit.

Near Bancroft - a long staying bird that seems to have settled in for the winter. It has been feeding on the ground on seeds.

Ingleside - This bird was spotted about 10 days ago and has been tough to see but after successive trips I finally had luck today. While some migrate through Northwestern Ontario, only a very few make it further east and south each year. This was our first local bird.
