Sarsfield (Ottawa) - Up to four birds were present for a few days – I saw two. They are rarely spotted in migration in the region.

Brian Morin: At close range the bird can easily be seen but a little further away and not moving, it becomes invisible thanks to perfectly matched plumage.

Cambridge - Fantastic find at a suburban retention pond where the bird was easily observed for an entire day. It was a one-day wonder but several hundred people got to see it before it left that night. The previous record in Eastern Canada was in 1990. The bird likely crossed from Russia, through Alaska into Canada and followed migrating shorebirds south.

Brian Morin: Very long day. Six hours travel each way but my late start (I only heard about it before 9:00 a.m.) meant I'd have nice late afternoon light leading into early evening. It was perfect. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I was one of the lucky few hundred. There were hundreds more that missed it. This bird in breeding plumage is unlike any other species we have.

Blenheim lagoons - A common species in migration at this location. There were hundreds in the lagoons but only a small number of adult males.

Brian Morin: This species has been very frustrating. Ruddy Ducks all over the place but so few good looking adult males and they always seemed to be too far out. This one broke the rule long enough for me to grab a few shots.

Brian Morin: Everything worked. The light was right, the background faded beautifully and the bird stayed still for about 10 seconds. That is a lifetime in bird photography.

Brian Morin: I spent 15 minutes trying to get a decent shot of this little guy. I got lots of pictures, a few of which worked. It was as tough as dealing with a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

London - The bird was actively calling for a prospective mate but none showed up. Similar to the Eastern Meadowlark but the call is a giveaway for this Prairie bird. The yellow on the face extends onto the cheek past the bill and the back is a sandier colour rather than brown.

Brian Morin: I spent a couple of hours with this bird at first light, hoping that it would come to the fence. It had been singing in a field about 100 metres away but eventually I was rewarded.

Prince Edward County (Gull Shoal) - We found two birds on a rocky shoal four km offshore. Pelicans breed in southwestern Lake Erie but a few birds wander before and after the breeding season. This summer individuals have been popping up across Ontario in the south, central and east, usually seen as flybys.
