Birding since the late 1980s...mid 40s birder. Being out in nature and hearing the morning chorus, seeing how birds interact with their surroundings and go about their lives provides me a greater understanding of the natural environment we live in. With bird photography, every photo is different, which makes seeing the same and different species exciting.

This species is one of the most striking we saw during a brief stay in Costa Rica. The colouring appears surreal but actually shows what we saw. The light reflection off the large leaves nearby may also have helped. Talari Mountain Lodge, Costa Rica.

Every bird photo contains a story behind it, along with a memory of the surroundings and environment. Each photo is different - one of the key reasons for taking more and more photos. Far from a textbook photo - which is fine - I'm happy to have finally seen this Great Gray in our Christmas Bird Count circle at Dorval, Montreal.

The highlight of the trip, not only for looking spectacular, but for seeing the excitement it created from many people and even non-birdwatchers. We were very lucky to have him fly down from a hidden perch into the open. With hope the forests can continue to be protected with increased interest and awareness of this and other bird species. Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, Costa Rica.

Seen at Monteverde, Costa Rica. Interestingly, this was seen while watching a Quetzal, and although I mentioned several times that a new species was perched above us, nobody in the group could take their eyes off the Quetzal and they missed the Jay.
