Sue Bishop: It appears to be a young male hanging around our back yard. It is absolutely obese, feeding on the salvias. We still have our feeder up also. Apparently the flight over the Gulf of Mexico takes 18-22 hours so he needs a lot of fat stores for the journey to his wintering grounds.
BrianMorin: He's a little porker for sure. I've never seen an overweight hummer before, only overweight shorebirds. Great shot.

Merlin - I spotted two pairs in this area. The males were singing. This Midwestern species irrupts into the region in small numbers to breed and it often occurs after our main songbird migration is over.

BrianMorin: This species in fall plumage can be difficult to tell from the Bay-breasted if the birds are obscured by foliage but there is no doubt about the subject with this photo.

BrianMorin: Mine too. One or two had been seen off and on for a couple of weeks but it took me 3 trips to the park with 5 visits to the island before it worked out. In fact, I had given up on the last trip and was going to head back empty handed when I got it.

Ottawa - This is migration time for shorebirds and a very small number of phalaropes have been reported. This species is very tolerant of people and if you remain still and wait for the bird to approach, it may come very close. This very young bird passed by at 3 metres. There is almost no crop for this shot.
