Brian Morin: This bird was right beside the road so I am only about 5 metres away and it didn't fly. I was treated to a lively series of calls.

Brian Morin: This was both a surprise and a shocker. I was trying to get some shots of a more distant Ring-necked Duck when I spotted this Bufflehead diving very close to shore and only about 5-7 metres from the car. The problem was that weed stalks were in the way, partially obscuring the shot so I waited until the bird would dive them backed up just enough to give me a chance. I was able to get it between the weeds with enough room to perform a decent crop. I also had it in perfect light and distance. As you know, without sun, this bird's head is black.

Brian Morin: This was the hawk of the day. I had a banner experience with 26 Rough-legs, a high count for the winter but this was the only one that offered me a chance to memorialize the outing. It also ended up being one of my better perched shots of the species.

Algonquin Park - Numerous Red Crossbills present but few White-winged this year. Normally we can expect pictures from ground level looking to tree tops but from the elevated visitor centre deck I was almost at the height of the trees.

Wolfe Island Kingston – It was a good winter for this species on the island. Earlier in the year I had many but while there were only 4-5 remaining on this day, I was very pleased with the result. The nice thing about shorties is that they usually become active before dark, in this case 2 hours ahead, so getting acceptable photos in available light is possible.

Wolfe Island (Kingston) - This was one of 5 shrikes I encountered that day, a record total for me. I figured that 2-3 of them were recent northbound migrants.
That is the actual colour of the bird. It's in transition.

We have a few bluebirds breeding in the area but they are always a treat to see. This male had a partner and had already selected a nest box.
