Date taken: Oct 18 2022

Details: male, juvenile

Blenheim - An uncommon migrant. Identified as a probable male based on bill length. Females have a longer bill. The same goes for Short-billed Dowitchers. To add to the confusion of species, you can have a long-billed, Short-billed Dowitcher and a short-billed, Long-billed Dowitcher. Both species were poorly named.

Ahmad Shah: Wonderful capture.
BrianMorin: The lighting was perfect but standing in wind that was 40-50 kph with zero cover was something else. I hung on to my heavy tripod and even heavier lens the whole time, just in case.

Brooklin - There is still a bit of breeding colour on the head but not much. This was the second day of the bird's appearance and I was lucky to be passing close by on my way home from Southern Ontario so I had to only make a minor detour.

Chris: Terrific clarity and what a cute bird.
BrianMorin: This was a great opportunity and the leafy background added to the shot.

Ahmad Shah: Nicely captured, that is quite the right name for it.
BrianMorin: I agree. I liked the shots where the speculum showed well.

Ahmad Shah: Superb capture of this lovely female Wood Duck, with nice reflection in the water. Well done Brian .
BrianMorin: Thanks. I know the focus tends to be on the male and he's great but I enjoy the subtle plumage of the female with her colour highlights. I deliberately tried for shots that best showed the fall colours reflected in the water.

Chris: Wow, not often you see one out in the open during the day. Tremendous detail.
BrianMorin: I was very happy that someone pointed the bird out to me. I stuck around a couple of hours until it started to become active.

Sue Bishop: Great find and capture,Brian!
BrianMorin: Shorebirds were in short supply so I focused on the Pipits which were very challenging to work with.

Presqu'ile Provincial Park - Gull Island. An uncommon to rare species in the park. They might get one every year or every other year in fall migration.

Comments (6):
Sue Bishop: Excellent. One of my favorites.
BrianMorin: Mine too. One or two had been seen off and on for a couple of weeks but it took me 3 trips to the park with 5 visits to the island before it worked out. In fact, I had given up on the last trip and was going to head back empty handed when I got it.

Presqu'ile Provincial Park - Gull Island This bird was a shocker. While checking a few birds on shore I saw bright orange legs from a distance and thought maybe a turnstone but not this time. We look for them in November but in recent years it has been December and still at best an annual rarity. Incredibly early. The bird is molting into its first winter plumage.

Ahmad Shah: Superb detailed shot of this tough species to get. You had good luck in Presqu'ile Park, specially in Gull Island.
BrianMorin: This was definitely a highlight, not only of the trip but of fall shorebird watching.
