male, adult, winter plummage
Ottawa - This was surprisingly one of the most common warblers that day, next to Yellows and Yelow-rumps. One tree had a dozen or more. These and other northern warblers have been around since the end of July and in better than expected numbers. We have been theorizing that there may have been an early departure thanks to forest fires in some areas.

Ottawa - for anyone not familiar with the offseason look for this species it will come as a shock.

Ottawa - We are into the challenging identification period with a host of confusing fall warblers to deal with. This is obviously a Parula and I think a first year bird.

Algonquin Park - I went all the way to Algonquin to get a picture of a waxwing :) Well the bird did look pretty nice. At this time of year you seldom see any of the local specialty birds like Canada Jays and Black-backed Woodpeckers.

Algonquin Park - How do I know it was a male? Because it was singing us a nice song. "Quick three beers". It was very high up in a dead tree so quite a crop unfortunately. If you've noticed I'm on a flycatcher roll. No chance of an Acadian but maybe I'll still get lucky somehere with a Yellow-bellied.

Whitney - Just outside Algonquin Park. Putting on a nice display. The nice earthtone colour is actually earth. The birds preen with mud and where it is iron-rich it is redder. There is lots of sandy-muddy soil in the area. In the late fall there is less of this activity and the birds' flat gray plumage is revealed. I like this look.

Ingleside - This heron was trying to shake off some of the rain during today's downpour.

Ottawa - Who knew I was going to be bringing you another Snowy so soon. This one has been summering in Ottawa on a residential construction site. Boy does it need a bath. Or perhaps that's camouflage "No one will recognize me now."

Long Sault - Common yes but I couldn't pass up these birds in such good light.

Ingleside - I try not to duplicate my subjects too often (Snowy Owls excepted) :) but this Marsh Wren was very cooperative this morning. I love the way they can readily grab on to two cattails for support. That's a Jean-Claude Van Damme move.
