The lighting was not great at Iona today, but I rarely see this species so was happy to get any photo record at all. The pair then took off and kept flying towards Vancouver Island.

Anna's Hummingbird (27)

After an unprecedented week of extreme weather, with temperatures below -10C and a snow storm of 35cm, the Anna's Hummingbirds were pushed to the limit. I found this one hiding in a hedge. We've kept the water from freezing as much as possible. As with so many bird photos, the story behind the photo makes for a lasting memory. Happy Holidays to all.

BrianMorin: Believe it or not your situation at the time was a carbon copy of our own, right down the the amount, which fell the day before our Christmas bird count. I hope your little guy makes it through. At this point for him it is all about food.

About the last species I'd think to see in Vancouver. He seemed to have some spider webs stuck to his back as he feverishly scoured every corner for food. Unfortunately there were several house cats around. On a good note the weather has slightly improved from snow and sub-zero temps to sunshine and above freezing - hopefully he makes his way.

BrianMorin: Well that's a surprise, Not only is it unseasonal, it is a few thousand kilometres out of range. There's a good chance it will make it through, at least for the Christmas count if it is in the area. :)
Chris: Believe it’s in the count circle. However tracking him through suburban housing complexes…seems to be complex. I was lucky this morning, as it seemed to have disappeared from sight this afternoon. Luckily his behaviour is quite conspicuous
