BrianMorin: On my way to London (Ontario) after Christmas I made a point of stopping in Burlington to check out the waterfowl. This is a great spot to see a large number of Long-tailed Ducks in the ship canal, often in close range. There can be a few hundred or several thousand depending on weather conditions. When it is windy the numbers are greater because they come in for shelter.

Presqu'ile Provincial Park - This is a fairly rare shot of a common winter duck on Lake Ontario. I have never seen one out of the water although I have seen thousands. The bird was about 20 metres offshore and I stealthily approached very slowly, stopping with each small advancement. I used the camera on tripod as my blind so my form would not be obvious. It worked. In fact, I could have gotten even closer but I stopped when the water reached 3/4" from the top of my rubber boots. I knew what would happen next. I'd turn around and head for shore and it would move (I was about 10 metres into the lake). As soon as I turned it headed into the water and swam away.

The best thing about this rare experience was the setting. It was perfect late afternoon light with the bird in exactly the right position.

Presqu'ile Provincial Park - What a treat to see this bird. I had the one In Montreal last fall but the setting was nowhere near as good as this. I could always orient myself for the right light unlike with the other bird. The flycatcher was likely blown up by warm stormy weather that originated on the Texas coast a few days ago.

It was very cold first thing in the morning and windy after that, keeping insects low or on the ground. It always fed on the ground and seldom went to a perch so most of my shots were of it on the ground.

BrianMorin: I selected a nice perched shot to show the bird rather than a lawn shot. I got plenty of those. This bird was fabulous and had us enjoying the show for almost four hours before it took a long break for the afternoon.
