Being attacked by a Northern Shrike. The owl is competition, not its next meal. I had the camera on a tripod and was watching the shrike, waiting to see if it would attack. I started shooting a couple of seconds before it reached the owl, otherwise a shot like this would be very difficult to get.

Presqu'ile Provincial Park - a good bird for us in the East. We didn't know the bird had been sighted in the morning. Note the droop at the end of the longer bill (shorter in Semipalmated Sandpiper) and the bit of rusty on the scapulars. I didn't realize until two days later that the bird reported earlier in the day had different markings so a second bird.

Good things can happen getting up at 5:00am. My second ever encounter with this species - Grande Prairie, Alberta. The first encounter in Arkansas had fewer mosquitoes.
