Yellowhammers are usually an indicator of healthy countryside habitats. They were very common in the Stapeler Moor, one of the last patches of moorland in the area.

winter plummage
Gulls were very numerous around the outflow of a power plant, especially because there were lots of dead fish in it, an easy prey for the gulls!

adult, winter plummage
Sometimes this species also has a black ring around the bill which can cause some confusion with the Ring-billed Gull. However there are some other characters that distinguish the two, such as the dark eye.

outside normal range
This bird, apparently a first-year bird, was quite the rarity. This species is seen on the North Sea coast every year but in very low numbers. The main contingent of the world's population winters around the Black Sea in Romania but there are always some stragglers that join flocks of other species going somewhere else!

This photo is of an individual of the Eastern subspecies nigricans, which is quite rare in Europe but some individuals occur every year mixed in with the more common subspecies. Sometimes it is treated as a separate species, the Black Brant (Branta nigricans).

This species has been introduced to Bermuda to fight against an invasive crab species (and protect an endemic Bermudan crab). Apparently they liked the abundance of crabs and became established on the islands!

This robin stayed around our banding station for several days and was very tame. It was getting some huge earthworms out of the ground! Robins pass thorugh Italy quite early in the spring, being a short-distance migrant that does not cross the Sahara desert to overwinter.

Not all Red-throated Pipits are so striking red! Many don't even show any red at all. It is a scarce but regular migrant in Italy. Given the amount of red I believe that this was a nice male!
