Brockville - I made several trips to check out this bird but with no sighting on Tuesday I was sure it had finally departed. Then I received a call yesterday afternoon that the bird was still there and had sought shelter out of the wind closer to shore. Conditions were very challenging, shooting through narrow openings in blowing cattails while standing in rubber boots in marsh mud, trying to maintain my balance. I had great luck in very nice light.

Brockville - Ospreys are pretty run of the mill for us but I won't turn down a good shot when it presents itself. This one had just snagged a small pike.

Brockville - There had been several reports of pelicans along the St. Lawrence River between the Quebec border and the 1000 Islands in recent weeks but most were one-day wonders. This bird stuck it out for over a week north of Brockville in a conservation area.

Kilmarnock - I returned to see this bird on a sunny day for a better show of colour. It sang its fluted song for a while but never moved to a more suitable low level perch. It hasn't yet given up hope that it will find a mate. Compared to its eastern cousin, this bird has brown feathering that is paler, with the yellow of the throat extending up to the beak.

Merrickville - What an incredible song this bird has, a terriffic Prairie tune. We listened to it singing for 90 minutes. Too bad it won't find a mate in the area since it is way out of range.

Algoma District - A treat for us so used to Red-winged Blackbirds. They have little in common with them except the family association. They are more approachable, spend most of the day ground feeding in grassy areas, fly about interacting with one another, have a very different call and males have an almost liquid metallic sheen.
