Aylmer - This is one of the most striking raptors – a long way from its southern home. The wing markings indicate a hatch-year bird.

Sue Bishop: Great find and capture,Brian. You also managed to get a closeup with the bird perched. We have seen them often in the tropics but it is really way out of it's range!! Congratulations!!
BrianMorin: They get them along the Gulf Coast in the US during the breeding season and before migration so that's where it likely came from. We got lucky with this bird that has hung around for over 10 days. It is far for me so one trip was all I could make.

Sue Bishop: Nice action shot!
BrianMorin: I don't know how many Harriers I've come across and never had any luck with them. I tried with this one and it worked pretty well.

Kingston - Not only is this bird far from its normal range, it is unusual to see one in this plumage this far north. Captured at first light.

Ottawa - A great treat to see this species within an hour from home. The bird was present for a few days, visible often at close range. One couple were sitting on a bench waiting for it to come to a feeder, only to find out the bird had been perched almost over their heads for 30 minutes. :)

Chris: I did t realize they were irruptive or prone to wandering. What a sight that must have been!
BrianMorin: They do wander and every year there are a few reports in the province but seldom this far east.

Crysler - I returned to the area and discovered the bird still present. I remained at one spot in the river (only inches deep in this area so great for shorebirds, and for me) and waited for it to approach for some good shots.

Chris: Terrific composition.
BrianMorin: I waited 90 minutes for the bird to return to this spot. I took shots in other settings but this was one of the best.

Cornwall - Common Nighthawks no longer breed in our region so if we want to see one in the summer we have to head almost two hours northwest onto part of the Canadian Shield. They prefer open rocky areas with limited vegetation for breeding. This bird was a migrant that spent the day sleeping on a power line. In the third week of August, several flocks of a dozen or more moved through late in the day.

Sue Bishop: Very nice,Brian. We saw a flock of 7 fly over our house yesterday as you said late in the day. Sad we don't see them more often!
BrianMorin: That's great. I too miss their evening flights during the breeding season.
