Ottawa - This is a very reliable bird. It stays in a very tight area and regularly fishes for frogs and minnows. Because of this it comes much lower in the trees than you'd otherwise see.

BrianMorin: I saw the owl a few hours earlier, further back and three times as high with a branch across its face. I returned, monitored it for 30 minutes when its started to come to life, preening then later flying to a much better perch for both of us (the bird and for me).

BrianMorin: I like the bird's pose. The Hooded Warbler is one of our most striking species. Any trip into the southwestern part of the province is a chance to pick up one of these beauties.

Ahmad Shah: Fabulous capture.
BrianMorin: He was a fine specimen and at very close range. I didn't move towards him, he flew in to defend territory from another male that was 4 metres from me. At one point he landed on the railing of the boardwalk, about 2 metres from me. What a show.

Red-necked Stint (3)

At Boundary Bay, in the same location as the Little Stint in 2018. This bird was amongst 1000-2000 sandpipers, and was a challenge to see. Many people were helpful in pointing out markers out in the bay to help find him, as he looks almost identical to Western Sandpiper when facing away. As the tide was coming in, the wind kicked up which meant most birds were facing away and with their heads tucked. One lucky photo came out.

BrianMorin: Great luck and shot. I knew the bird was in the area and wondered if you'd have a chance to look for it. Even better, it's still in breeding plumage.
Chris: It was extremely lucky. Not only were they so many birds, but they kept going up for short flights. Once someone finally refound the bird, it would take time to point out the location, only to have a Gull or Swallow fly by and send them up again. Fascinating experience, and the sounds are unforgettable.

South Lancaster - I had to be at the site by 5:15 a.m. to make sure I'd see the crane family head from the marsh to an adjacent soybean field. My shooting window today lasted about 3 minutes with the best shots in the first minute. Usually it is about 20 seconds.
