They are large birds with a wingspan of 152cm (60inch). The casque on top of their bills are hollow, concave and serve no known purpose. They are monogamous and often build their nests in the same place every year. Before mating, they clean up the nesting hollow and engage in a little courtship involving food exchange. The female will spend increasing amounts of time inside the nest. When the eggs are laid, she sheds her breast feathers and seals herself inside the nest, leaving a vertical slit for the male to feed her. Here we see their pre-mating preparations.

This male is feeding his chicks. After he's caught the fish, he pauses on a perch to confirm "all clear" of predators, before approaching the nest
The female has an orange lower mandible

They are one of the smallest kingfishers in the world. Roughly the size of a mid-sized hummingbird.
Male and female. This is probably shortly after mating, during nest-building. They nest in a hole that they dig in a vertical mud wall, in dark, covered river/stream beds. Thus, the bits of mud on their beaks. Incubation and feeding are done by both parents.

Alfred - This is a nest site, part of a colony in a large pile of peat on a peat farm. I hope the young fledge before the hill is excavated.

Point Pelee National Park - The only reason I can say this was a male is because the female was on the nest nearby. We watched the bird doing its 'dance' as it probed the mud for worms. This shot is uncropped. The bird was very close to a trail and remained within seven metres two days straight. The food must have been good there but also he was not far from the nest to offer assistance if required.

Not one, but 3 Yellow-rumped Warblers today at the feeders. There was a successful nest last year - wondering if somehow the same birds made their way back to the same location.

Ottawa - This is a known bird, quite used to people, although this was my first visit in a few years. It roosts a short distance from the nest site which the female is currently occupying. When I shot the photo, the bird was cautiously watching a mother raccoon and two kits high in a tree 8 metres away. They had just emerged for a night ramble. After a couple of minutes it launched towards the raccoons and flew right at the mother's head with wings open, likely dragging his claws on her fur as he flew by, it was that close. After a couple of minutes he repeated the attack and five minutes later did it again, each time engaging her head. It was pretty dark at that point so I didn't see the final outcome but the issue is that raccoons are one of the prime predators for Screech Owl nests.

The shots were taken as darkness was setting in so this was at only 1/10 second on tripod using a remote and ISO was up to 3200 (I don't have a mirrorless camera so ISO is an issue). Many of the shots incredibly were in focus and looked not bad. I got lucky.

Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary - Locally uncommon species. I'm hoping the bird finds a mate because the habitat is perfect and there are plenty of existing nest sites on the market. :)

Algonquin Provincial Park - Some of the jays (renamed Canada Jay a couple of years ago) are already nesting but a few were on one trail taking advantage of handouts.
