Another shot from Gomantang caves. you find 3 swiftlets here- the other two being edible-nest and black-nest swiftlets. Mossy-nest builds a nest
with vegetable matter with little nest cement. Edible-nest constructs an all white nest of nest cement while Black-nest uses nest cement containing many impurities.

Black-nest Swiftlets nest in caves. Gomantong caves are not for the faint-hearted. The smell is overpowering and the floors covered with droppings are alive with cockroaches

Cornwall - Bird at nest site at dawn. It had been feeding its single 10-day old chick a cottontail rabbit. This must have been a very late nesting.

We have a few bluebirds breeding in the area but they are always a treat to see. This male had a partner and had already selected a nest box.

Algonquin Park - There were hundreds of Red Crossbills. They were seen or heard at virtually every stop and are almost certainly nesting right now. They can breed in any month of the year, the decision being based on food availability not season. There are many types, with this one likely being the type that feeds on pines which have a good cone crop. They are notoriously tame, being very approachable and at times landing only a few feet away if you are still.

Cornwall - I'm pretty sure this is the remaining bird from the pair that had bred here for several years. The male was injured in the spring and because its wing could not be repaired it was euthanized unfortunately. They had been using an old industrial smokestack platform as a nest site. The dark area behind the bird is inside the smokestack.

Presqu'ile Provincial Park - This is a provincially endangered species with only a few breeding pairs. 2023 was a poor breeding year. This male was calling and flying about proclaiming territory. We were not near a nest. The pair did not nest this year but another pair did.

ODKFs mate and reproduce twice, in immediate succession. Two sets of eggs and fledglings in usually, the same nest. This is a male-female pair in the stage between two reproductive cycles. Not sure which is what.
