Amherst Island - there were over 1,000 present that day. It was part of a fallout at multiple points along Lake Ontario.

Thanks to the City of Richmond, Ducks Unlimited Canada and Environment Canada. A little snip-it from the billboard at the Terra Nova Natural Area: 35 acre site, once farmland, has lain fallow for 20 years. Goal to preserve old field and grassland habitat and providing a diversity of plantings for the benefit of many bird species. 80 species use the habitats with the Terra Nova Park, adjacent to the Sturgeon Banks.

Cornwall - Most siskins left the province last fall so a small flock at a local feeder was a pleasant surprise.

Ottawa - A good flight this fall. The birds are present for only a short time before heading south to the US Atlantic coast.

winter plummage
Cornwall - note the profile of this bird. It holds its tail and wings up unlike other subspecies of Lessers but also unlike most gulls. This is the intermedius subspecies which is considered rare in North America but I had several birds. I think we get a small number of these birds each fall. It also has a darker back than the more frequently seen Lessers. UPDATE: I have been corresponding with three gull experts and while interesting the bird doesn't quite measure up as far as that subspecies goes. Not black enough for one thing. The bottom line, however, it is still a Lesser Black-backed :)

Ottawa - We are into the challenging identification period with a host of confusing fall warblers to deal with. This is obviously a Parula and I think a first year bird.

Whitney - Just outside Algonquin Park. Putting on a nice display. The nice earthtone colour is actually earth. The birds preen with mud and where it is iron-rich it is redder. There is lots of sandy-muddy soil in the area. In the late fall there is less of this activity and the birds' flat gray plumage is revealed. I like this look.
