St. Albert - this Moorhen family (renamed Common Gallinule) had 6 chicks. At one point it grew to 10 when another female asked this one to mind the kids while she went shopping for lunch :)

This photo is a little blurry but it shows a very special encounter: away from any water a whole family of Virginia Rails (one adult and 4 chicks) crossed our road out of the blue! This was stayed behind nd wasn't sure whether to cross or not... it eventually did and joined all the others!

After the 1964 earthquake moved the entire island up by five metres, exposing a large strip of land, the murre cliffs became several hundred metres from the ocean. The young birds--which fledge at a quarter of adult weight--then needed to run the gauntlet of glaucous-winged gulls to get to the sea. Here, a family group pauses at a pond on their way to the sea.

fallow field at Drummersdale House Farm, Scarisbrick, Lancashire. I was driving down a lane on what has been the family farm for over 200 years, when a whitish blur swept past the windscreen. I only had a short lens with me, so the resolution is poor on this surprising visitor.
