Cornwall - This was a case of being in the right place at the right time. I was sitting in my car by the water and the kingfisher flew up to a rock for a perfect photo setting.

BrianMorin: As I'm sure you know from experience, this is a difficult bird to get close to. I wasn't on top of it but close enough for a good capture.

Sue Bishop: It appears to be a young male hanging around our back yard. It is absolutely obese, feeding on the salvias. We still have our feeder up also. Apparently the flight over the Gulf of Mexico takes 18-22 hours so he needs a lot of fat stores for the journey to his wintering grounds.
BrianMorin: He's a little porker for sure. I've never seen an overweight hummer before, only overweight shorebirds. Great shot.

Cornwall - I'm pretty sure this is the remaining bird from the pair that had bred here for several years. The male was injured in the spring and because its wing could not be repaired it was euthanized unfortunately. They had been using an old industrial smokestack platform as a nest site. The dark area behind the bird is inside the smokestack.

BrianMorin: I have been by the site a number of times with no success so it was great to have a chance to both see and photograph the bird. Adults have such striking plumage.
