Brian Morin: This was both a surprise and a shocker. I was trying to get some shots of a more distant Ring-necked Duck when I spotted this Bufflehead diving very close to shore and only about 5-7 metres from the car. The problem was that weed stalks were in the way, partially obscuring the shot so I waited until the bird would dive them backed up just enough to give me a chance. I was able to get it between the weeds with enough room to perform a decent crop. I also had it in perfect light and distance. As you know, without sun, this bird's head is black.

Brian Morin: This was the hawk of the day. I had a banner experience with 26 Rough-legs, a high count for the winter but this was the only one that offered me a chance to memorialize the outing. It also ended up being one of my better perched shots of the species.

Brian Morin: It is hard to capture the true colour of the Scarlet Tanager with digital cameras but overcast conditions like this help.
Chris: Yes terrific job with this one Sue. Ive had trouble with a Vermilion Flycatcher where the red just overwhelmed my camera.

Algonquin Park - Numerous Red Crossbills present but few White-winged this year. Normally we can expect pictures from ground level looking to tree tops but from the elevated visitor centre deck I was almost at the height of the trees.

Brian Morin: I ran into the same issue earlier in the week with Short-eared Owls, right down to the last rays of sunlight. You did well.
Chris: I’ve noticed the sun out here seems different than in the east. More “blinding” and I tend to get burned more easily. Have yet to pinpoint what it causing this difference
